Why Your Combined VA Rating May Be Lower Than You Expect
The VA doesn’t simply add up your disability percentages — they use what’s called “VA Math.” Each new rating is applied to the remaining “healthy” portion of your body, not on top of 100%. For example, if you have a 50% rating, you’re considered 50% disabled and 50% healthy. If you then get another 30% rating, the VA takes 30% of your remaining 50% healthy portion (15%) and adds it to your total, giving you 65% — which is rounded to the nearest 10% (in this case, 70%). This process is why the final combined rating can seem lower than simply adding your percentages together.
